Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao

When it comes time for the Basque derby of La Liga between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao, things always get messy. These two clubs do not love each other and they show it on the pitch. Both teams are approaching this game after marvelous wins during the week. The two Basque teams eliminated the powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona from Copa del Rey, reaching the 1/2-finals. You can be sure that both teams are feeling euphoric at the moment.

On Thursday Real Sociedad paid a visit to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu and celebrated at the end after an amazing 4-3 win. They became the first team to score four goals against Real Madrid under the management of Zinedine Zidane. It was a great win.

In La Liga La Real are currently 8th in the standings with 34 points, but the 6th Atletico Madrid is just two points away. Sociedad have a realistic chance to improve their position in the table.

Athletic Bilbao also played on Thursday in Copa del Rey. They hosted Barcelona at San Mames Barria and reached the 1/2-finals after a dramatic 1-0 win. It was Barca’s veteran Sergio Busquets who scored himself an own goal in the last minutes of the match. Athletic’ fans just went crazy after they saw the ball going behind Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s back.

In our La Liga predictions we can assure you that Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao will fight until death on Sunday. This game is a matter of honor for both sides, because they are Basques and the Basques are always like that. It’s hard to pick a favourite here, so we will just watch and enjoy the game.
